Passionate Pursuit of Purpose Steve Taylor E-mail Steve Lakeshore Bible Church Tempe, Arizona
Passion without substance is useless and misdirected. We have to direct our passion with a knowledge of the truth. It was that way in the life of the writer of the Philippian letter. In the words we read in today's text, we see the passion and obsession of the Apostle Paul. He gladly forfeited everything to focus on Jesus. He didn't just want to know about Jesus, he wanted to know Jesus personally. Christ's obsession was Paul's obsession. Christ's message was Paul's message. Christ's purpose was Paul's purpose. It was his passionate pursuit. What's yours?
Philippians 3:7-21; Revelation 3:15,16; Proverbs 19:2

Believing our Beliefs Wally Winner E-mail Wally Joy Fellowship Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith Piedmont, SC
Faith is one of the most precious treasures a person can possibly possess, but it's a pity that so few understand what the Bible teaches about it. Faith is often confused with optimism, determination, or superstition, but it's believing. The Bible tells us that without faith in God, we can't please God. We have to take God at His word. We have to live by faith. If we are characterized and identified as "believers" - like the early church - shouldn't it be important what we believe? Isn't it time to start believing our beliefs?
Acts 2:37-43; 3:16; 4:4; 6:5; 16:5; Hebrews 11:6,1,33,34; John 14:1

Who is Jesus Christ? Mark DeYoung E-mail Mark Blanchard Church of God Blanchard, Michigan
In the book of Judges, we read about a man and his mother who created an image and built a chapel for themselves to worship God. They had good intentions, but the god they created was not the God of the Bible. They replaced Him with their own image. They did what was right in their own eyes, and eventually they led an entire tribe of Israel astray with their influence. Many today have followed the same path. They have repeated this behavior in direct contradiction to the infallible word of God. They have a form of Christianity but have allowed religious traditions to have greater authority than God's own words, and now declare Jesus to be worshiped as the one true God. But is that what the Bible really teaches? Is that what the Bible really says? Is that what Jesus himself said? Who is this man, Jesus Christ? What's your answer? Is it from the Bible?

The Bible's Most Misunderstood Text Hollis Partlowe
Perhaps some of the most misused and misunderstood Bible texts come from the parables Jesus used to teach the multitudes. But to interpret any of these illustrations, we must remember why it was told and to whom it was told. And perhaps no passage has been more misinterpreted than the parable of "The Rich Man and Lazarus." Was Jesus trying to teach about the afterlife? Or are we missing the point? In today's message, Pastor Partlowe clarifies the simple truth and the religious lesson behind this story.
Luke 16:14,19-31; 15:1,2; Mark 4:1,2, 33,34; Matt. 13:10,11; 15:22; Deut. 7:6; 28:13; Exo. 19:6; Amos 3:2; Rom. 3:1,2; 9:4;
John 4:1,2,13,14; Eph. 2:11; Rev. 22:18,19; Gen. 17:7,8; Gal. 3:16,29; Acts 2:27,31,34;Psa. 16:10; 146:4,5; 115:17; Eccl. 9:5

Trivializing the Gospel: Fear and Dread Chuck Jones E-mail Chuck Church of the Open Bible Pomona, California
Understanding and believing the Gospel of the Kingdom brings life, but has it changed yours? Are we trivializing the Gospel? In today's message from this series, we see how the Gospel is trivialized when we're afraid. It can be easy to be defeated by the "giants" of this world if we're afraid. But we can't be defeated if we know and remember God's promises. In today's study, Pastor Chuck encourages us not to Forget Eternally Assured Rewards.

Strength from Above Bill Wachtel
Sometimes, it's easier to think we can do things our way. Sometimes we think we even know how to do things a better way than God. We may think we are virtuous enough, or good enough, or strong enough on our own, but nothing we could ever do on our own could ever be enough to earn eternal life. But in that still, small voice we find strength. In standing still, and listening to God, he makes us stronger. So where does your strength come from?
Mark 6:7-13; 30-32

What Kind of People Ought We to Be? Mike Montgomery E-mail Mike Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith Pelzer, SC
With all of the troubling news and cataclysmic events that seem to be happening more frequently, people are beginning to wonder what's going to happen. What's going on? Is this the end of the world? Are these the last days? As we examine the scriptures, it would certainly seem that way, but God has a better tomorrow planned. It's not enough to simply know that though. Our future hope should have a present effect on our lives today.

The Great
Return Tom New E-mail Tom McGintytown Church of
God Greenbrier,
Arkansas
After Jesus ascended, his followers were told that he would return in the same way as they saw him leave. And his disciples believed it was true. They had already witnessed the power of God through his resurrection. This has been the hope throughout the ages that Jesus would return to this earth. And yet there are Christians who have lost hope, left their faith, and changed their message because his return has not yet happened. But until Jesus returns, it's up to us to prepare ourselves and prepare the world until he comes back.
Acts 1:6-11; Luke 21:26; 17:26; 1Thess. 4:16,17; Gen. 5:13; 2 Tim. 4:1; 1 Cor. 15:24-28; Matt. 25:32; John 5:22,25-29;

Most of us don't just want to walk into something unprepared, not knowing what's going on. We like to ask questions to prepare ourselves. We want to know what to expect. In the same way, the followers of Jesus have been forewarned in advance of what to be looking for before His return. Jesus tells us to, "Watch out!" Are you watching? Are you ready?

Mountain-Moving Faith: The Sermon on the Mount Wally Winner E-mail Wally Joy Fellowship Church of God Piedmont, SC
The longest recorded sermon that Jesus preached is known as "the sermon on the mount." You might call it "a kingdom manifesto." It was a radical message during its time, and its teachings still apply to the world we're living in today. In today's concluding message in this series, we examine the characteristics from the Beatitudes and how they can transform and reconstruct our hearts.

Implicit Assumptions Bruce Reye E-mail Bruce Chapel Hill Church of God Urbana, Ohio
When it comes to being a lawyer and asking questions in a court of law, there are a certain set of rules and instructions for examining a witness. A lawyer cannot lead a witness with implicit assumptions. In his letter to the church at Philippi, the Apostle Paul wrote to prepare himself and the believers for either his release or his death. But there are many people who read the passage we examine today with implicit assumptions. Did Paul misunderstand the time and the place of his future reward? Did he think that when he died that he would "depart" to heaven? In today's message, we closely examine the evidence to find out the truth in Paul's words.
Philippians 1:23,24; 2 Timothy 4:6-8; 2:15; Eccl. 9:5,6; 3:19,20; Acts 2:29,34,35; John 11:11; 2 Cor. 4:14; 1 Cor. 15:50-58
Decisions that Cannot be Delayed Steve Taylor E-mail Steve Lakeshore Bible Church Tempe, Arizona
We all have to make important decisions that often can be life-changing and challenging. Sometimes, our choices cannot be delayed. In today's story, we see Joshua standing before the people of Israel one final time. He recounts all of the amazing works and wonders that God had done in their midst. Then he tells the people it's time to make a choice. Either serve the Lord, or serve the gods of this world. Maybe it's time for you to reflect on the journey of your life. Maybe it's time to make up your mind. Yesterday's choice isn't good enough. Today, a decision is required. What will you choose?
Joshua 24; Romans 12:1,2

Mountain-Moving Faith: Mt. Sinai - Forfeiting Blessings Wally Winner E-mail Wally Joy Fellowship Church of God Piedmont, SC
Moses led the newly emancipated pilgrims of Israel out of Egypt, but they failed to accept God's presence into their lives. They "remained at a distance." They rejected God's invitation and accepted ordinary instead of extraordinary. God still extends His divine invitation today and wants us to draw near unto Him. Will you come close and commune with God, or will you "remain at a distance?"
Exodus 20:21; 19:4,13,15; Hebrews 10:19; 1 Peter 2:9,10; 1:12

Serve Faithfully Mark DeYoung E-mail Mark Blanchard Church of God Blanchard, Michigan
In today's message, we examine two men from the Book of Judges. The only record in the Bible of these two men, Tola and Jair, is in their service as Judges to the nation of Israel. We find no great description of their lives or colorful depiction of their deeds, but we do see that they served faithfully. The Christian life is often much like that. Most of us may never be a great evangelist, have great works published, or be written about long after we're gone, but wherever God has put us, He has called us all to serve faithfully.

Trivializing the Gospel: Distorting the Gospel Chuck Jones E-mail Chuck Church of the Open Bible Pomona, California
Understanding and believing the Gospel of the Kingdom brings life, but has it changed yours? Are we trivializing the Gospel? In today's message from this series, we see how the Gospel is trivialized when it's distorted. The Gospel message is everlasting and universal. It hasn't changed. It has to be believed and obeyed, and it's up to us to share it without any distortions.

The Importance of Prophecy Bill Wachtel
How important is it to know the Word of God? Are you earnestly "seeking the scriptures daily" like the Bereans in the early church? Is studying and knowing Bible prophecy still important in modern times? Why should it be believed? How do we know it's sure? Never-Ending Spring Michael Hoffman E-mail Michael Oregon Church of God Oregon, Illinois
Following the long winter, there's nothing like the springtime when the earth starts coming back to new life. No matter how much snow we got or how cold the temperatures were, we were always assured that spring was coming. It's a great representation of life. No matter how bad things get, we know that a better season is coming ahead. Conditions are going to change. New life is coming. And when Jesus returns, it will be like a never-ending spring. Maybe it's time for us to start doing a little "spring-cleaning."
Prov. 16:15; Songs 2:10-13; Hosea 6:3; James 5:7; 1 Cor. 15:20-28; Rev. 19:11-18; 20:1-6; 21:1-5; 22:1-6; Isa. 35; 65; 55:6-12

Two Minutes to Midnight V.E. Kirkpatrick October 17, 1974
Hurricanes, earthquakes, war, the Middle East in crisis, nuclear weapons, the economy...and wait, this message is from 1974? Pastor Kirkpatrick reminds us that world events are very significant signals to the church. What does it say about us if the newspapers are announcing the end of the world, and the church isn't? People today are afraid of what's happening. It's our job to warn the world of what to expect - before it's too late. It does makes a difference what you believe. Time is ticking...and we don't have much time left.

Conquering Strongholds Steve Taylor E-mail Steve Lakeshore Bible Church Tempe, Arizona
If you've ever been to Sunday School class, you've probably heard the story of Joshua and the fall of the walls of Jericho. The Israelites had been promised the land, but they first had to overcome a mighty city with mighty walls. It was a great stronghold. They were given specific instructions they had to follow to defeat the city, but it wasn't the typical battle strategy. In this great Bible story, we find a great lesson for us today. We're also marching along on our journey to the Promised Land. We're in a daily battle against the strongholds of this world, but we might have to act a little unconventionally. Will you obey God's specific instructions to overcome the opposition?
Joshua 5,6; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; 5:7; Romans 6:4; Galatians 5:16,25; Ephesians 4:1,17,18; 1 Thessalonians 2:12

Turn, Turn, Turn Mike Montgomery E-mail Mike Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith Pelzer, South Carolina
The 80th Psalm is a communal petition attributed to Asaph. It's a psalm of restoration, revival, and renewal. It's a corporate cry for help from a nation that had turned its back on the Lord, but it also shows faithful expectation and assurance of God's answer to their plea. In our lives, often we can identify with the words of the Psalmist, and we need to return to our Father for His leading.

Trivializing the Gospel: Selfishness Chuck Jones E-mail Chuck Church of the Open Bible Pomona, California
Understanding and believing the Gospel of the Kingdom brings life, but has it changed yours? Are we trivializing the Gospel? In today's message from this series, we focus on selfishness. Selfishness is defined as being concerned exclusively or excessively with one's self. It is seeking or concentrating on one's advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard to others. It's a character flaw that we can avoid. It's a trait that trivializes the good news we've got to share.

Burning our Bitterness Mark DeYoung E-mail Mark Blanchard Church of God Blanchard, Michigan
After Gideon's great victory, the land lived in peace for 40 years. Gideon even went on to have 70 sons. But that's not where the story ends. One of his sons, Abimelech, decided to overthrow his brothers by force, killing them all. Because of his bitterness, he became so cold-hearted that he had no love or sympathy even for his own relatives. It's a lesson we all can learn. We can be bitter, or we can be better. The choice is yours.

Rock Reminders Steve Taylor E-mail Steve Lakeshore Bible Church Tempe, Arizona
Maybe it's a string around your finger. Maybe it's a shopping list. We all can use a reminder about something important. In today's lesson, as we continue following Joshua and the Israelite people into the Promised Land, we look at an important lesson about remembering what our God has done for us through the stones of the Jordan River.

Mountain-Moving Faith: Mt. Carmel Wally Winner E-mail Wally Joy Fellowship Church of God Piedmont, South Carolina
Elijah stood on Mt. Carmel challenging his nation to return to God. He stood up against the false prophets of his day challenging them to prove their god was real. But Elijah knew the power of the one and only true God. Elijah knew the victory that was in store. And the story of faith on that day on that mountain is one still recounted to this day.
1 Kings 18

Genesis and the Apocalypse Hollis Partlowe
Genesis is the book of beginnings. We read of the origin of all things. We read how the perfect environment that man lived in was lost through disobedience. In Revelation, or the Apocalypse, the final book of the New Testament, we read of the completion of God's program. We see how God is planning to restore the perfection that was lost with a new order of things. In today's message, we look at the parallels and comparisons from these two books. And through out all of the Bible from beginning to end, we see a complete book of redemption, where man's life and home has been redeemed by God through his only son.
Gen. 1:1,16; 3:17-24; 22:17,18; 10:8; 11:18; 24; 19; Rev. 21:1-4,23; 22:5,14; 17:3; 11:8,18; 19:7;Ecc. 1:4; Psa. 37; 1 Cor. 15:24-28
